WISH LIST

"My Basic Checklist"

"My personal checklist is provided in the hope that out in the wilds it may suggest items you wish you'd brought and vow to bring the next time. Between trips in the city it may help you plan the next one and prevent you from setting forth into the wilderness without something vital.

"The checklist takes the place of a perfect memory, and the longer it runs the more security it provides. Every time I buy a new piece of gear, I add it to my checklist, but I rarely can bring myself to cross anything off, even the items I have not dreamed of carrying in years. Like other backpackers, interested in comfort, I enjoy reading other people's lists. The abridged checklist that follows may serve as a starter for new-comers to backpacking--but only as a starter. A checklist is a highly personal thing and the beginner must eventually construct his own, updating it after every trip to make sure it contains every scrap of gear he owns."
