Several hundred companies sell shares of stock directly to the public. Investors can bypass even the discount online broker with commission free direct -stock-purchase (DSP) and dividend-reinvestment plans (DRIPs). Here are a few that are available.

If you would like to join a DRIP but cannot find a broker who will sell you one share to get started ( and pay a commission for such a small purchase), here is a site that offers a solution. It is also a place where you can buy a share of stock as a gift (especially useful for grandparents).
