MANUAL METHOD FOR CONFIGURING MICROSOFT "WINDOWS 95" OR "WINDOWS 98" FOR PPP ACCESS Step 1 If you have installed a modem and it is working properly, go to Step 36. Step 2 If you are planning on installing an INTERNAL modem (one that plugs into the expansion bus inside your computer), go to Step 18. Step 3 If you have not installed a modem into your computer and you plan on installing an EXTERNAL modem (one that comes it's own case), locate, activate (via C-MOS setup), or install a "COM" port. ("COM" ports are also known as "serial ports" or "RS-232 ports". Each one is designated as either "COM1", "COM2", "COM3", or "COM4".) Step 4 Run the following diagnostic procedure to test your "COM" port: Step 5 Single left click on the "Start" button. Step 6 Single left click on "Settings". Step 7 Single left click on "Control Panel". Step 8 Inside the "Control Panel" window, double-click on the "System" icon, using your left mouse button. Step 9 Single left click on the "Device Manager" tab. Step 10 Double-click on "Ports". Step 11 Make sure that the "COM" port that you are planning on using for your modem is listed. Step 12 Double-click on the listing of this "COM" port. Step 13 Make sure that the "General" tab is the one that is on top. Step 14 Make sure that in the "Device Status" box, it says "This device is working properly." Step 15 Click on the "Cancel" button of the "Communications Port (COM?) Properties.." box. Step 16 Click on the "Cancel" button of the "System Properties" box. Step 17 Close the "Control Panel" window. Step 18 Install your modem. Follow the instructions that were provided by it's manufacturer. Step 19 Run the following diagnostic procedure to see if "Windows" has accepted your modem: Step 20 Left click on the "Start" button. Step 21 Left click on "Settings". Step 22 Left click on "Control Panel". Step 23 Double-click on the "Modems" icon. Step 24 If the manufacturer/model of your modem is listed in the white window, go to Step 35. Step 25 If your modem is not listed in the white window, do the following: Step 26 Left click on the "Add" button. Step 27 Click on the "Next" button. Step 28 If Windows has picked the correct name for your modem, go to step 33. Step 29 Left click on "Change". Step 30 In the left box called "Manufacturers", left click on the correct manufacturer for your modem, so that the name of the manufacturer is highlighted. Step 31 In the right box called "Modems", left click on the modem that is closest to yours, so that the name of the modem is highlighted. Step 32 If the "Install New Modem" box did not disappear, click on "Okay" to make the "Install New Modem" box disappear. Step 33 Left click on "Next" in the "Verify Modem" box. Step 34 Left click on "Finish" in the "Install New Modem" box. Step 35 Left click on "Close" in the "Modems Properties" box. Step 36 If your "Control Panel" window is not open, left click on "Start", then left click on "Settings", and then left click on "Control Panel". Step 37 Double click on the "Network" icon. Step 38 In the top white window, if "Dial-Up Adapter" is listed, then left click on "Cancel" and go to Step 46. Step 39 Otherwise, left click on "Add". Step 40 Left click on "Adapter" in order to highlight it. Step 41 Left click on "Add". (The next 3 steps (42, 43, and 44) are performed in the "Select Network Adapters" box:) Step 42 In the "Manufacturers:" box/field, locate "Microsoft", and left click on it. Step 43 In the "Network Adapters;" box/field, left click on "Dial-Up Adapter". Step 44 Click on "Okay" in the "Select Network Adapters" box. Step 45 Windows will now prompt you to perform various activities including the insertion of some of the original installation disks or CD-ROM and ultimately, a shutdown and reboot of your computer. Perform each step carefully, as instructed. Step 46 Left click on the "Start" button. Step 47 Left click on "Settings". Step 48 Left click on "Control Panel". Step 49 Double click on the "Network" icon. Step 50 In the top white window, if "TCP/IP" or "TCP/IP --> Dial-Up Adapter" is listed, then left click on "Cancel" and go to Step 59. Step 51 Otherwise, left click on "Add". Step 52 Left click on "Protocol" in order to highlight it. Step 53 Left click on "Add". Step 54 In the "Manufacturers:" box, locate "Microsoft", and left click on it. Step 55 In the "Network Protocols:" box, left click on "TCP/IP" in order to highlight it. Step 56 Left click on "OK". Step 57 Windows will now prompt you to perform various activities including the insertion of the original installation disks or CD-ROM and ultimately, a shutdown and reboot of your computer. Perform each step carefully, as instructed by your computer. Also, during the setup of "TCP/IP" protocol, Windows will ask you for various settings. Do not make any changes to the default values that are shown on any of these screens. Accept all of the default values and keep hitting the "Next" button. Step 58 When you get to the "Finish" button, click on it and Windows will re-boot your computer. Step 59 Left click on the "Start" button. Step 60 Left click on "Programs". Step 61 Left click on "Accessories". Step 62 Left click on "Dial-Up Networking". Step 63 Left click on "Make New Connection". Step 64 In the top white field, give your new connection a name. Example: "LAFN" Step 65 Left click on "Next". Step 66 Type in the correct area code and phone number for dial-up into Los Angeles Free-Net. Make sure the number that you use is a local call for you. Step 67 Left click on "Next". Step 68 Left click on "Finish". Step 69 Your "Dial-Up Networking" window should still be open. If it is not, find it and open it. Step 70 Find the icon that you have just created in this window. Step 71 RIGHT click on it. A gray box will pop up. Step 72 In this gray box, left click on "Properties". Step 73 Left click on the "Configure" button. Step 74 Left click on the "Options" tab so that it becomes the one that is on top. Step 75 Make sure that the white box next to "Bring up terminal window before dialing" is NOT checked. Step 76 Make sure that the white box next to "Bring up terminal window after dialer" is NOT checked. Step 77 Make sure that the white box next to "Display modem status" is checked. Step 78 Left click on "Okay". Step 79 You should be back to the "General" tab. Step 80 Left click on "Server Type". Step 81 You should now be in a box called "Server Types". Step 82 Make sure that the "Type of Dial-Up Server:" is "PPP.." (The words after "PPP" differ for the the various versions of "Dial Up Networking".) Step 83 Make sure that the white box next to "Log on to network" is NOT checked. (Unless your computer is on a "LAN" ("Local Area Network") AND the mapped network drives are required for "Dial Up Networking" to work properly.) Step 84 Make sure that the white box next to "Enable software compression" is checked. Step 85 Make sure that the white box next to "Require encrypted password" is not checked. Step 86 Make sure that the white box next to "TCP/IP" is checked. Step 87 Left click or double-click on the "TCP/IP Settings" box. Step 88 You should now be in a box called "TCP/IP Settings". Step 89 Make sure that the white dot next to "Server assigned IP address" is darkened. Step 90 Make sure that the white box next to "Use IP header compression" is checked. Step 91 Make sure that the white box next to "Use default gateway on remote network" is checked. Step 92 Click on the white dot to the left of "Specify name server address" in order to darken it. (When you do this, the white dot next to "Server assigned name server address" will "un-darken" and turn to pure white.) Step 93 In the white box to the right of "Primary DNS", replace the 0.0.0.0 with 206.117.18.9 Step 94 In the white box to the right of "Secondard DNS", replace the 0.0.0.0 with 206.117.18.5 Step 95 Click on "Okay" to make the "Server Types" box disappear. Step 96 Click on "Okay" to make the "LAFN" box disappear. Step 97 Your "Dial-Up Networking" window should still be open. If it is not, find it and open it. (It is located inside "My Computer", usually toward the bottom of "My Computer".) Step 98 Left double click on the dial up networking icon that you have created for L.A. Free-Net. (It is probably named "LAFN.) Step 99 A "Connect To" box opens up. Step 100 Put your L. A. Free-Net user login id (example: ez321) in the "User name:" box. (Be sure to use lower case for the 2 letters.) Step 101 Put your password into the Password box. (Remember: Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure to use the correct case for any letters in your password.) Step 102 If you want your computer to remember your password so that you do not have to type it into the "Password" field of the "LAFN" "Dial Up Networking" box in the future, click on the white square to the left of "Save password" in order to place a checkmark into the box. Step 103 Single left click on the "Connect" button. Step 104 The box says "Connecting to.." Step 105 The box says "Status: Dialing" Step 106 The box says "Logging.." Step 107 You will know that you are connected via PPP to L.A. Free-Net when the box says "You are connected to LAFN.." (or "..connected to 'whatever you named this icon'). Step 108 If step 106 occurs, go to the Step 145. Step 109 If step 106 does not occur: click on the "Cancel" button, close the "Connecting to.." box. Then repeat steps 96 through 107. Step 110 If step 106 still does not occur, go on the following steps: Step 111 Click on the "Cancel" button and then close the "Connecting to.." box. Step 112 You might have an older modem that does not support "Password Authentication Protocol" ("PAP"). Step 113 In the steps which follow, you will attempt to run "Dial Up Networking" to connect to L.A. Free-Net without "PAP" ("Password Authentication Protocol"). Step 114 Your "Dial-Up Networking" window should still be open. If it is not, find it and open it. (It is inside "My Computer".) Step 115 Find the icon that you have created for L.A. Free-Net in this window. It is probably called "LAFN". Step 116 Use your RIGHT mouse button to perform a single click on it. A grey box will pop up. Step 117 In this grey box, left click on "Properties". Step 118 Single left click on the "Configure" button. Step 119 Single left click on the "Options" tab so that it becomes the one that is on top. Step 120 Make sure that the white box next to "Bring up terminal window before dialing" is NOT checked. Step 121 Make sure that the white box next to "Bring up terminal window after dialer" IS checked. (When this white box is checked, this turns off "Password Authentication Protocol" ("PAP") in Windows Dial Up Networking. This is often the only way to get older modems to work with "Dial Up Networking".) Step 122 Make sure that the white box next to "Display modem status" is checked. Step 123 Single left click on "Okay". Step 124 You should be back to the "General" tab. Step 125 Single left click on "Okay" to make the "LAFN" box disappear. Step 126 Your "Dial-Up Networking" window should still be open. If it is not, find it and open it. (It is located inside "My Computer".) Step 127 Left double click on the Dial Up Networking icon that you have created for L.A. Freenet. Step 128 A "Connect To" box opens up. Step 129 If it is not already there, put your L. A. Free-Net user login id (example: ez321) in the "User name:" box. (Be sure to use lower case for the 2 letters.) Step 130 At this point you do NOT have to put your password in the Password box (since you are now using manual password entry instead of PAP). Step 131 Left click on the "Connect" button. Step 132 The box says "Connecting to.." Step 133 The box says "Status: Dialing" Step 134 A mainly black "Post-Dial Terminal Screen" window will pop up. Step 135 In this black box, L.A. Free-Net will say: "Type "lafn" and :". PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS! (If you do so, we will not start PPP for you!) Step 136 Instead, type in your login id. (Example: ez321) Step 137 Then hit the ENTER key on your keyboard. Step 138 In the black box, L.A. Free-Net will then say "Password:" Step 139 Type in your password. (Remember: passwords are case-sensitive.) Step 140 Then hit the ENTER key on your keyboard. Step 141 You will see an unending string of "garbage" characters in the black box. This is normal. Step 142 Either click on the "Continue(F7)" button OR hit the F7 key on your keyboard. Step 143 You will know that you are connected via PPP to L.A. Freenet when the box says "You are connected to LAFN..". (or "..connected to 'whatever you named this icon'). Step 144 If step 142 occurs, go to the Step 145. Step 145 If step 142 does NOT occur, click on the "Cancel" button and close the "Connecting to.." box. Then repeat steps 125 through 143. Step 146 Final step: Now run your Internet browser software and/or e-mail software. If you need to configure your Internet browser and/or e-mail software, the correct settings are located at http://www.lafn.org/help/settings.txt Be sure to remember to set the proxy server settings in your Web browser software; if you do not do this, you will only be able to access the Web pages at http://www.lafn.org and you might not like this restriction !
