Windows XP SP2 systems with RAM over 1GB fail to enter Hibernate mode properly

Problem:
Windows XP SP2 computers with more than 1GByte of RAM may fail when preparing to enter hibernation mode, particularly when many processes are running.

Symptom: Upon entering hibernation, the screen goes dark (this would be normal as it changes video modes) but instead of starting the hibernation sequence, there may be two audio clicks and the desktop re-appears and the following error ToolTip is displayed:

Windows - System Error
Insufficient System Resources Exist to Complete the API

After the error occurs, the "Hibernate" tab in the "Power Options Properties" (Control Panel > Power Options) is unavailable until next boot/Windows session:

The Solution:
Use a browser to navigate to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909095

Scroll down, and the page will look something like:

Scroll down to the "Resolution" section. Click on the link:
Download the Update for Windows XP (KB909095) package now.

You will be required to first download a validation tool called
GenuineCheck.exe 1,478,696 bytes

Run the GenuineCheck.exe program.

It will open a dialog box with a validation code something like:

Please note that the validation code on this page has been altered. You will need to get your own confirmation code.

Click the "copy to Clipboard" button.

Return to the webpage and paste the validation code into the appropriate field.

Click the appropriate button.

download the hotfix file:
WindowsXP-KB909095-x86-ENU.exe 2,531,056 bytes

Run the hotfix program. Agree to the EULA.

After running the hotfix program, you will be given the option of Restarting (warm booting) the computer now. It is strongly recommended that you put a check in the "Do not restart now" box and cold boot the machine later at your leisure.

Click the "Finish" button.

End of procedure, all should work well after rebooting.
