Unofficial LAFN Homepage Workarounds

This is an unsanctioned compendium describing a few ways of getting around the new LAFN homepage, as well as direct links to the main sub-pages from the new homepage.

You will note that the page is divided into four sections: top and bottom, and both of these are divided into left and right.

In the diagram above, I show the dividers ("left/right moveable" and "up/down moveable"). If you carefully position your mouse cursor over either of these dividers so that the mouse cursor changes to a double-headed arrow: , then hold down the left mouse button, you will be able to change the location of that divider.

By moving the horizontal divider up and moving the lower vertical divider to the left, you can make the bottom right frame much larger. However, this will not adequately resolve any printing issues which might arise from the frame, and you will not be able to see the options on the left any more without re-resizing that divider.

Issues with printing pages are more easily gotten around by using the method in the next paragraph.

I find it more useful to simply right-click on the item to the left, then open the link in a new tab (or you can open it in a new window if you're using Internet Explorer 6). This will open the link without any frames. This technique also works for links in the bottom right frame.

Some folks miss being able to perform a full web Google search from the LAFN homepage (that option was removed with the new homepage.) However, you can still get to it with a little trick.
  • Go to the new home page and scroll to the bottom with the Google button.
  • click on the "Google Search" button without putting any information in the field.
  • This will take you to a Google search page with the options of searching the web or searching just LAFN.

Finally, here are links directly to the pages of interest: as well as some more useful immediate links: and of course, a link to the Mentors' Resource Guide.
If you run across any tricks which you think should be included on this page, or if you find anything grossly inaccurate, please let me know.
