It is assumed that Eudora version 7.x for Windows has been installed. This is essential.
This procedure has been tested for versions 7.0.0.16 and 7.1.0.9 on a Windows XP Home machine.
There are some minor differences between 7.0.0.9 and 7.1.0.9. The screen caps are gathered from
v7.1.0.9; any substantial differences will be noted as required, and referenced as merely 7.0 and 7.1.
- Open a "DOS" window by clicking the "Start" button, then "Programs", then "Accessories",
then "Command Prompt".
- At the DOS prompt, type (with the double quotes):
cd "\program files\qualcomm\eudora\extrastuff"
and press the "Enter" key
- copy the file 'esoteric.epi' to the parent directory by typing:
copy esoteric.epi ..
(note that those two extra periods are absolutely required)
and press the "Enter" key
- close the Command Prompt window by typing:
exit
and press the "Enter" key

- Open Eudora
- Click on menu item "Tools" then "Options":

- If necessary, click on "Getting Started" in the left pane.
- Ensure that your "Real Name" is how you wish your name to appear in correspondence
- "Email address" must be in the form of userid@lafn.org
- "Mail Server" must be "mail.lafn.org" (lower case)
- "User name" must be your userid
- "SMTP Server" must be "smtp.lafn.org" (lower case)
- "Allow authentication" must be checked.

- Click on "Checking Mail" in the left pane.
- "Mail Server" must be "mail.lafn.org"
- "User Name" must be your userid
- "Check for mail every" [x] "minutes" should be set to either "0" for no checking,
or some other number (#) to check for email every '#' minutes.
- "Don't check without a network connection" should be checked.
- [Optional] "Don't check when using battery" only applies to laptops; leave this unchecked for
desktops or towers.
- "Send on check" refers to sending pending outgoing emails whenever you check for incoming emails.
This is a personal preference.
- [difference 7.1 vs 7.0] v7.0 has a checkbox, "Save Password" which 7.1 does not have on this screen,
it puts the checkbox elsewhere. If you're using 7.0 and you are in a secure environment, check this box.
- [essential] "Secure Sockets when Receiving" must be set to "Required, alternate port".
We will set up this port number a bit later.

- Click on "Incoming Mail" in the left pane.
All the values should be defaults as shown:

- Click on "Sending Mail" in the left pane.
- "Email Address" must be your email address.
- "Domain to add to unqualified addresses", not sure about this, but make it "lafn.org"
- "SMTP server" must be "smtp.lafn.org"
- "SMTP Relay Personality" works when I set it to "< Dominant >".
- "Allow Authentication" must be checked.
- "Immediate send" is a personal choice.
- "Send on check" is a personal choice.
- "Use submission port (587)" must be unchecked.
- "Secure Sockets when Sending" must be, "Required, STARTTLS"

- Now we get to the reason why we did that DOS thing up above, that copying of the esoteric.epi file. It
adds some functionality to the Tools > Options of Eudora in the form of "Ports". In the left pane, scroll all
the way down to the bottom of the available options. The very last (bottom) one should be "Ports". Click on that.
- Enter the values exactly as shown below:
- "SMTP Port (25):" enter 25
- "POP Prt (110):" enter 985
- "IMAP Port (143)" not relevant, leave as is.

- Click the "OK" button to close the "Options" dialog box.
- Close Eudora, wait ten seconds, and reopen Eudora.
- The next thing which is required is to "force" the relevant LAFN smtp and mail certificates into the
Eudora software. We will do this by sending a test email to ourselves, then trying to read (download) it.
- Make sure you're connected to the internet.
- Click on the "New Message" icon:

- The subject and the body do not matter. Just make sure that the email is being sent to yourself
then click the "Send" button in the upper right area of the toolbar.
- Very soon after you try to send the email, you should get a password confirmation. Enter your userid
and password as requested. (this is where v7.0 and v7.1 differ; in v7.1,
the "remember password" checkbox is in this dialog box)
- Immediately after that, you should get a certificate challenge which looks something like this:

- click "Yes" to accept the certificate for the smtp cert.
- Now, we will try to receive the email which has just been sent. Click on the "Check Mail" icon.

- You will be required to enter your password again. (Again, this is where v7.0 and v7.1 differ;
in v7.1, the "remember password is in this dialog box)
- Again, you will be presented with a certificate challenge which looks like:

- click "Yes" to accept the certificate for the mail cert.
- By this point, Eudora 7.x should be running okay. Send yourself another email to test it out.
