Socks Windows 98 Netscape Settings
Note: It is necessary to set the Windows Internet Options even if the user does not use Internet Explorer.
- Open the Control Panel by clicking "Start" > "Settings" > "Control Panel".
- Open Internet Options by doubleclicking "Internet Options" (or just "Internet").
- Click on the "Connections" tab, the following window will be displayed:
- Make sure that the correct dialer is selected in the text area ("LAFN 310 873-1251 (Default)" in the above example).
- Click on the "LAN Settings..." button, the following window will be displayed:
- Make sure that no checkboxes are checked in the LAN Settings window. Click the "OK" button to return to the "Internet Options / Connections" window.
- Click on the "Settings..." button to the right of the text area where the dialer is selected; the following window will be displayed:
- Verify the following:
- Both checkboxes in the "Automatic configuration" frame are unchecked.
- "Use a proxy server" is checked.
- "Bypass proxy server for local addresses" is unchecked.
- "User name" and "Password" are correctly filled in.
- Click the top "Advanced..." button (in the "Proxy server" frame), the following window will be displayed:
- Verify the following:
- The top four addresses are blank.
- The "Socks" address contains "proxy.lafn.org".
- The port numbers are correct.
- "Use the same proxy server for all protocols" is unchecked.
- The "Exceptions" text area contains "www.lafn.org"
(Some older systems may require "www.lafn.org:80" or "www.lafn.org:8001")
- Click "OK" to return to the previous window.
- Click the "Properties" button to get to the "Dial-up Properties" window, shown below:
- Click the "Server Types" tab to get to the next window:
- Verify the following:
- The "Type of Dial-Up Server" must be "PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98".
- Only "Enable software compression" and "TCP/IP" should be checked.
- Click the "TCP/IP Settings..." button to display the following window:
- Verify the following:
- "Server assigned IP address" is selected.
- "Specify name server addresses" is selected.
- The correct DNS and WINS numbers are entered in the appropriate fields.
- The "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network" checkboxes are checked.
- Click "OK", "OK", "OK", ("Apply" if enabled), and "OK" to exit all the way out of Internet Options.
- Close the Control Panel.
- Open Netscape Navigator.
- Click menu items: "Edit" then "Preferences", then doubleclick "Advanced" and click "Proxies" to display the following window:
- Verify that "Manual proxy configuration" is selected.
- Click the "View..." button to display this window:
- Verify the following:
- The "Socks" address contains "proxy.lafn.org".
- The "Socks" port number is "1080".
- All remaining address fields are blank.
- The remaining port numbers may be included or left blank.
- The "Exceptions" text area contains "www.lafn.org"
(Some older systems may require "www.lafn.org:80" or "www.lafn.org:8001")
- Click "OK" and "OK" to exit out of Netscape Navigator "Edit > Preferences".
- Close Netscape Navigator.
