Here are the most popular tools for searching the World Wide
Web, Other Internet Resources, and
USENET. For best results, try your search with several
different tools.
For a quick search of the Web, try
All The Web or
or Yahoo. Additional
specific search tools include Alta Vista,
Excite, Infoseek, Galaxy, and Dejanews (for searching USENET).
There are also a number of comprehensive
programs that combine the resources of
many search tools and allow you to select specific information without
browsing through a large number of links, and there is now Search Engine Colossus,
an international directory of search engines and searchable databases
indexed by country and by subject.
For people interested in writing and testing their Web Pages, there are a
number of HTML and Web page validation tools and
more than 500 links to Web Page development guides.
Comprehensive Search Tools
- Ask Jeeves: PPP users will
find this a most useful tool because you can phrase your inquiry as an
English sentence. Jeeves also sends you the results from a variety of search
engines.
- The Internet Sleuth: This is a
sophisticated search
tool for experienced usrs that allows you to customize your search. It
combines the best of many search tools into a single powerful instrument.
- Dogpile:
This tool also "fetches" information from a variety of search tools
selected by the individual user.
- The All In One Search:
This includes a useful Desk Reference section and a cornucopia of
miscellaneous information.
- Savvy Search:
Colorado State University's tool for searching multiple WWW, Internet,
USENET, and WAIS sources.

Specific Search Tools
- Alta Vista: This is a
comprehensive tool for finding text in either the World Wide Web or in
USENET. Lynx users can find the URL of their choice by first typing
"host:" (without the quotes).
For example: host:www.lafn.org
- Excite: Another
useful Websearch tool.
- Infoseek's
Search: Lynx users can type in the URL directly by replacing each
dot and slash with a space.
For example: www yahoo com
- Galaxy: A useful index.
- DejaNews: This is a
tool for searching USENET Newsgroups for specific text.
