Next Meeting

Manhattan Beach Bread and Bagel
1808 North Sepulveda Boulevard
Manhattan Beach
Wednesday, March 25, 7:30PM

Our new meeting day is the fourth Wednesday of each month. Refreshments will be provided courtesy of the Bakery.

We will hear from representatives of the Vote Yes on the Propositions May 19 campaign.

The measures currently approved for the ballot include:

Proposition 1A, State Budget. Changes California Budget Process, limits State Spending, increases "Rainy Day" Budget Stabilization Fund
Proposition 1B, Education Funding payment plan
Proposition 1C, Lottery Modernization Act.
Proposition 1D, Protects Children's Services Funding, helps balance state budget.
Proposition 1E, Mental Health Services Funding, Temporary Reallocation, helps balance state budget.
Proposition 1F, Elected Officials' Salaries. Prevents pay increases during budget deficit years.

Our New Venue

It's hard to complain about losing our previous location now that our meetings are being held at Manhattan Bread and Bagel. The room is big enough to accommodate us, and best of all, we get to enjoy some of the best baked goods in the South Bay courtesy of bakery owner Michael Keegan.

Solar Home Tours

On May 16th, the Environmental Priorities Network will hold its fourth annual tour featuring seven local homes that have electricity-generating solar panels. The homes, in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Torrance, and Redondo Beach, will be open to visitors for two hours each, starting at 9:30 –11:30 AM and finishing up with the last home at 3:30 – 5:30 PM.

The homes have many environmentally friendly features like solar hot water heating, double-pane windows, low voltage lighting, off- peak timed appliances, and drought tolerant planting.

We can use the sun to produce our electricity, and with the federal government offering a 30% tax rebate to anyone who installs solar panels, this is the best time to do so.

You can pick up a flyer at the EPN booth on Earth Day in Pollywog Park, or you may request a copy by contacting Lillian Light, 310-545-1384, lklight@verizon.net, or Virginia Hilker, 310-378-2036, vthnews@ verizon.net.

From the White House

Ray,

I have been meaning to write back to you. I'm doing well. I am actually writing to you having just left the White House, where I've been working for the last week and a half.

It is a short-term position, and I am not certain yet what I'll be doing in a couple of months -- possibly still in DC, and possibly coming home. But it's a thrill to be here. I am actually in the Office of Presidential Personnel, where we're working on political appointees within the administration.
