Next Meeting

Tuesday, October 26, 7:30 PM
David K. Hayward Center
2000 Artesia Boulevard
Redondo Beach

Children’s author and activist April Halprin Wayland will be our speaker. Ms. Wayland is an author of awardwinning books for juveniles and teens and a member of the faculty of the Writers’ Program of UCLA Extension. She will be speaking about her group of over 350 published authors and illustrators which has placed ads in swing state teacher publications.

This is the last pre-election meeting: come network with your fellow activists as we go the last mile together!

Harman Bike Ride

Come one, come all on Saturday, October 30th, to the Harman campaign’s biennial Bike the Beach ride! The ride itself begins in Torrance at 11:00 a.m., but we’ll kick things off at 9:00 a.m. with a breakfast in San Pedro. Stay tuned for the location.

Then it’s off to Torrance to begin the ride. We’ll meet in the parking lot of Paso de la Playa on the Torrance/ PV border. From there, we head north, stopping at the piers in Redondo, Hermosa, and Manhattan Beaches, and Playa del Rey in Vista del Mar Park, before finishing up in Venice around 3:00 PM. As in past years, Guy Dill will host a party for all the riders at his Venice Studio. You can join the ride at any point, or just come for the party at the end. Contact Stephanie Zarro at or Aaron Preston at prestona, or call the campaign office at 310-328-9125.

Get On the Bus

There is still time to get on the bus to Las Vegas.

“The fight for the White House is in the Swing States. Please, please come every weekend,” said Ann Sheridan, Kerry Nevada State Director.

With Nevada’s five electoral votes at stake, volunteers from South Bay for Kerry have been flocking to the 3rd Congressional District by bus, leaving from the Metro station at Marine and Redondo Beach Ave.

The bus departs on Saturdays at 7 AM from the Metro station and returns on Sundays before 11 PM.

There is something for everyone to do, from walking door to door, data entry, phone calling, and driving voters to the polls. Nevada law allows for two weeks of voting, which began last weekend.

Travel cost is $35 for the bus. Hotel is approx. $60, or $33 for a shared hotel room, or you can have a home stay with a local Kerry supporter.

If you are low on funds, you can still go. The committee will find a sponsor for your bus trip, and you can stay for free with a Vegas volunteer.

There are still three trips before the election:

Oct. 23-24
Oct. 29-31 (1, 2, or 3 nights)
Oct. 30-31 (1 night)

RSVP to Scott Haas at:

or call Al Lay at: 310-497-3013.

Our October 8 Debate watching party at Mr. Pockets drew a huge crowd including some luminaries. Ray Waters, Shirlee Browne, and Lori Geittman (right) share a light moment at the Manhattan Beach venue.
