"WAKE UP
DEMOCRATS...

Take Back the Country"
Conference

BY JIM MCGREEVY

On June 24th at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, the "Wake Up Democrats!" conference, sponsored by the Southern California Americans for Democratic Action, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the Campaign for America’s Future and the "L.A. Weekly" newspaper, was held. The conference was a reaction to the Democratic Party leadership’s refusal to protest the stolen election in Florida.

Many liberal and progressive Democrats and groups, even Greens, joined to protest the illegitimate Bush Presidency and espouse many other liberal causes, like the environment, civil and voting rights, women’s rights, campaign finance reform, education, saving Social Security and Medicare, universal health care and many other local and national issues.

Speakers included Rep. Richard Gephardt, Rob Reiner, Robert Reich, Rep. Hilda Solis, Ed Begley Jr., Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., Warren Beatty, Rep. Maxine Waters, Rep. Dennis Kucinich and many others. The loudest response went to former Assistant D.A. Vincent Bugliosi, who just published "The Betrayal of America: How The Supreme Court Undermined Our Constitution And Chose Our President."

five U.S. Supreme Court Justices ( Rehnquist, Scalia, Clarence Thomas, O’Connor, and Kennedy) who stole the Florida election and handed it to George W. Bush. He listed fact after fact that none of the mainstream media has printed or broadcast; it has only been published by the alternative media and Internet websites and newsgroups ( and newspapers overseas). He believes that "The Felonious Five" are criminals and should be locked up!

There were many, many issues raised by all the speakers that most Americans believe in. If this conference had been broadcast there would have been a groundswell of indignant Americans in the streets. But the right wing controls the media and we can only get our side of all these issues heard by word of mouth. We’ll each have to work hard to let our opinions be heard and to win back the Congress next year, which was exactly the point of the "Wake Up Democrats!" conference.
