Gov. Jerry Brown Revisited

Our own Teresa Bird will be the speaker this month. Teresa has finally consented to share with us her part in the administration of Gov. Edmund G. (Jerry) Brown Jr. As many of you may know, Teresa was office manager of Governor Brown’s Los Angeles office during the eight years of his administration.

Many of us have heard little bits of her experiences during this exciting time in California but few of us know the full inside story. She will tell us of her longtime volunteer work that landed her this position.

After the administration of Governor Brown, Teresa worked on the staff of State Senator Ralph Dills for 13 years. Senator Dills is also a legend, having begun his political career during Upton Sinclair's EPIC (End Poverty in California) race for governor during the 1930s. Teresa now serves as our 53rd A.D. Committee Chair.

Day at the Races

Once again, racing fans, you will have a chance to attend the horse races at Hollywood Park and contribute to your Club. The date is Saturday, July 14. The cost is $29. This will include parking, admission and a roast turkey lunch.

The event is sponsored by the 53rd A.D. Committee for the benefit of the clubs in the district. Each club will get $8 per ticket it sells.

Gates open at 11 A.M. Lunch will be served at noon and the first race is at 1 P.M.

Teresa Bird, A.D. chair, said that we will have inside seating in an air conditioned area with the ability to go outside to watch the races. There are television monitors showing the races at the tables. The Day at the Races has become an annual event well attended and enjoyed by all.

To get tickets, send a check to Teresa Bird, xxxx W. 231st Street, Torrance, CA 90505 or call Teresa at 310-326-xxxx. Tickets will be available at our meeting this month.

Jean Sanders Remembered

Many people were saddened to learn of the recent loss of Jean Sanders, our CDC Controller and longtime member of the Torrance-Lomita-Carson Democratic Club. She passed away suddenly at the CDC Convention. The funeral was held on Tuesday, May 29.

Welcome New Members

We have several new members this month: Christine Jones, Bill and Nancy Hirsch, and Sam Shahid. Bill and Nancy have lived in Redondo Beach since July of last year; he is a retired attorney who practiced in St. Louis before moving to the South Bay. Mr. Shahid, also from St. Louis, has been active in the Young Democrats and worked for Dick Gephardt. He moved here this month and found us by calling State Senator Debra Bowen’s office. We welcome our new members and give kudos to Membership Chair Bob Barnwell for his work on outreach; our booth at the Riviera Fair attracted most of these new people.
