Short Course Descriptions

Short Course #1
Effortless Breathing, Part I
Erik Peper, PhD

All health professionals who are interested in learning to
reduce the effort of breathing in people with chronic pain,
chronic fatigue, anxiety, asthma and those who want to
achieve optimum perfor-mance. Especially appropriate for
practitioners who have a behavioral medicine/biofeedback
based practice. Part I will provide an overview of dys-
functional respiratory psychophysiology within a systems
perspective. Experiential demonstration and self-
observations of breathing styles.

Short Course #2
It's Never Too Late to Self-Regulate
Joan Coxe, RN, BSN

As the U.S. average age rises, biofeedback therapists can
expect to see older adults seeking behavioral therapy for
functional disorders. This course provides an overview of
some common chronic conditions of aging as well as age-
related changes in memory and intelligence. We'll explore
strategies to maximize learning for biofeedback therapy
with an older population.

Short Course #3
Creating Wholeness: Empowerment for Self
Healing
Catherine HoIt, MPH

By focusing on wholeness rather than illness, and teaching
self-regulation skills, we can create a climate of healing in
which each person can cultivate his or her unique self-
healing abilities. This course presents methods for teaching
relaxation, diaphrag-matic breathing, and hand-warming;
empowering ways to revise cognitive patterns; and imagery
for healing.

Short Course #5
Introduction to Rosen Method Body Work
Susanna Smart, RN, BSN

This gentle and profound hands-on method offers
"feedback" (through touch and words) to facilitate
awareness and relaxation. As habitual muscle holding is
contracted, insights and memories may arise. With
compassionate curiosity and acceptance of "what is",
practitioner and client together explore the release of old
tension patterns, and the possibility of greater ease. (Note:
This course not taped.)

Short Course #6
Pediatric Applications of Biofeedback
Stephen Francis, MA

This course will enable the biofeedback practitioner to
expand his/her practice to include working with children
and adolescents. Areas covered will include instrument
selection, use of ancillary behavioral techniques and
networking with the medical community for appropriate
referrals. This area of biofeedback is largely ignored and
untapped.

Short Course #7
EEG Driven Stimulation
Lyn Ochs, PhD

EEG-Driven Stimulation is a non-cognitive neuro-therapy
in the domain of evoked, rather than spon-taneous EEG.
The dimly-flashing LED feedback automatically flattens the
amplitude and standard deviation of the EEG across the
spectrum, and as it does, behavioral deficits are reduced,
automatically correcting mood, cognitive, energy, and
movement problems.

Short Course #8
Bridging to Corporations with Biofeedback:
Stress Relaxation Training
David Mars, PhD

Methods will be presented for successfully obtaining
corporate biofeedback training contracts, conducting needs
assessment and designing biofeedback training programs
for the work place. Stages of training, systems to
communicate concepts, and ways to motivate participants
will be given. The methods presented are also highly useful
in clinical and community settings.

Short Course #9
Stress Management/Biofeedback & the Chronically Mentally Ill
Wayne Henkelmann, MS, MFCC

Disagreement exists as to the appropriateness and/or
effectiveness of biofeedback and other stress management
learning modalities in treating individuals with chronic
mental illness. A significant anecdotal and published
literature base exists to suggest that stress and limited self
regulation skills plays a part in the relapse, severity of
illness symptoms and initial onset of illness. This course
will provide both an overview of chronic mental illnesses
and the considerations in working with clients experiencing
these disorders, as well as existing protocols/practices
integrating biofeedback and other self regulation strategies
in the thera-peutic treatment process of these disorders.

Short Course #10
Myofascial Pain Protocol
LaWana Heald, BS CBT

This is a protocol for treating Myofascial Pain Syndrome
incorporating techniques for recognizing and treating
asymmetrical patterns. It includes a protocol for EMG
evaluation and treatment which can be incorporated into
the standard 1 hour biofeedback session.

Short Course #11
Breath Training Capnography
David Mars, PhD

The capnometer is a biofeedback device that measures
carbon dioxide in the breath. Capnometers will be provided
so that participants can have direct experience with
"shaping blood chemistry through the breath". The learning
will be valuable for treating panic, anxiety, and functional
cardiac disorders, hyperventilation and stress management.

Short Course #12
Home Training, the Crucial Link
Ira Rosenberg, PhD

In this course special exercises that have been developed
over the last twelve years will be shared along with the
underlying theory, and how to deal with special problems
that come up in clients' home practices, including
noncompliance, fear of relaxation, blanking out at specific
points in the exercise routines, how and when to change the
exercises.

Short Course #13
Biofeedback and Meditation, Part I
David Bezanson, PhD

Learn effects, side effects, indications, contraindica-tions,
lifestyle impediments and facilitators and applications to
stressors, physiologic disorders and problem solving. Learn
an array of meditation forms via group practice, ways of
integrating meditation with biofeedback and objective
methods (including biofeedback) of selecting optimal
meditation forms for yourself and your clients. Learn to use
Medita-tion Quotient Questionnaire. Literature will be
critically reviewed.

Short Course #14
Reimbursement in the 90's: The Importance of
Correct Coding
LaWana Heald, BS, CBT

This presentation will focus on reimbursement issues facing
biofeedback therapists and other health care providers. The
importance of ICD 9 CM and CPT 4 coding will be
emphasized. A brief overview covers how to use the code
books and why coding is here to stay and why; without
adequate coding the provider loses money.

Short Course #17
Biofeedback & the Treatment of Craniofascial Pain
Shirley May, BSN

Craniomandibular disorders rarely occur as single entities,
but rather as part of a number of problems with overlapping
symptoms. The multi-nature of these problems demand an
interrelated diagnosis and multidisciplinary approach to
their management. This course will provide a basic
understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the TM
joint. The awareness model will be used as the framework
for understanding the biofeedback treatment components,
such as patient assessment, education, treatment, and
integration of skills into daily life. Biofeedback will be
presented as one of the treatment modalities in a team
approach to treating temporomandibular dysfunction.

Short Course #19
Somatic Perceptions, Somatic Disclosure
Eleanor Crisweil-Hanna, EdD

Somatics is a term coined by Thomas Hanna for the
mind/body integration field. Hanna Somatics refers to
Hanna Somatic Education (the hands-on work) and the
Somatic Exercises--precisely programmed movement
patterns to stimulate the brain's release of muscular
tightness and pain. These exercises are a highly effective
way to awaken and reawaken the mind's control of
movement, flexibility and health. They are valuable
adjunctive techniques for biofeedback training. Principles
of Hanna Somatics also aid in assessment of presenting
complaints.

Short Course #20
Psychiatric Medications: Effects, Side Effects and
Biofeedback Effects
Nick Pappas, MD.

Frequently clients who present for biofeedback therapy are
taking some form of psychoactive medications. It is
imperative for the therapist to be aware of the therapeutic
effects and side effects, and how these medications may
interact with the biofeedback process. This presentation
will discuss various classes of psychoactive medications,
such as antipsychotics, tranquilizers, and antidepressants,
their effects, side effects and known interactions with
biofeedback.

Short Course #21
A Comprehensive Approach to Chronic Pain
Stephen Francis, MA

Biofeedback has proven efficacious in the treatment of
many kinds of chronic pain conditions. In this course the
participant will gain an understanding of the physiology of
different pain conditions and rationales for which type of
biofeedback to use in treatment. Emphasis will also be
given to interaction with primary referral sources and a
rationale for making referrals to other complementary or
alternative medical services. The course will utilize
research conducted at a university-based pain facility over
the last five years.
