Configuring Macintosh OS-X Mail V2 Application

1. First start mail.
2. Then select Preferences from the Mail Menu. That will gring up a the following window:

   

3. The window may not be set for Accounts. If it is not, then click on the Accounts icon and it will look like the picture above.
4. Click on the LAFN mail account and select the Edit button. There are two possible windows that you will get:

             

5. Fill in the Email Address with your address.
6. Fill in the Full Name as you wish it to appear in messages you send.
7. Fill in the Incoming Mail Server as shown.
8. Fill in the User Name with your user id.
9. Fill in the Password with your password.
10. If the Outgoing Mail Server shows smtp.lafn.org then click on the Options or Server Settings button. Otherwise click on the server button and select add new server.

    

11. Make sure the Outgoing Mail server is set to smtp.lafn.org.
12. Set the Server port to 25, 26, or 587 as necessary.
13. Make sure the Use Secure Sockets Layer checkbox is checked.
14. Set Authentication to Password.
15. Enter your user id in User Name (id not e-mail address) and password.
16. To not use SSL/TLS clear the Use Secure Sockets Layer checkbox.

    

17. Click on OK.
18. You are now back on the previous screen. Click on the Advanced tab.

    

19. Set up the entries as shown. This will enable the downloading of mail using SSL/TLS to protect your user id and password.
20. Note, that with OS-X Panther (10.3), mail will not handle SSL correctly on port 110. You have to let it default to port 995. OS-X Jaguar (10.2) works better using port 110.
21. Click on OK.
22. Close the Accounts window.

If you have configured SSL/TLS then when mail first tries to receive or send mail it will give you a dialog box about the certificate not being able to be authenticated. This occurs because the LAFN certificates are self-signed. You can either accept the certificate for use during this mail session by clicking the Continue button or you can follow the next procedure to accept each certificates until they expire. Note, there are two certificates involved: one for sending mail and one for downloading mail.
