  15. Check the values in the listing
  16. Click on the Back button if you need to correct any of the values.
  17. Click on the Finish button and you will be at the Thunderbird mail window. You now need to setup the SMTP-AUTH and SSL configuration as described below.

Configuring SMTP-AUTH and SSL

  1. Start Thunderbird
  2. Click on Tools Menu
  3. Select Account Settings Menu Item

  4. Select your LAFN Account name if it is not selected
  5. Select Server Settings if it is not selected

  6. Select the Use secure connection [SSL] button. This should change the port number from 110 to 995.
  7. Clear the Leave messages on server checkbox.
  8. You may select the Check for new messages every x minutes but please set the number of minutes to 5 or greater.
  9. Click on the Outgoing Server [SMTP] Item

  10. Set the port to 25 (default), 26, or 587. Users connecting via a broadband service will likely find port 25 blocked and will need to use port 26, or 587.
  11. Select the Use name and password checkbox
  12. Enter your User ID (not email address) in the User Name field
  13. Select the TLS checkbox. The SSL checkbox does not work.
  14. Click on the OK button.

You now are ready to establish the certificats and passwords as described in the next session.

Establishing the Certificates and Passwords

  1. Click on the Write icon. Compose a message and send it. You can send it to yourself if desired.
  2. You will get a dialog that the Server Certificate is not Valid. This occurs because LAFN Uses self-signed certificates to reduce our costs.

  3. Click on the OK button

  4. Select Accept this certificate permanently
  5. Click on the OK button.
  6. You will get a dialog requesting your password

  7. Enter your password
  8. Click on the OK button

The message should now be sent and you will be returned to the Thunderbird mail window.

Now click on the Get Mail icon. You will go through the same steps as above to set the certificate and password for the receive mail server.
