Using Panda Antivirus Pro with mail

Panda Antivirus Pro is available from http://www.pandasecurity.com/. Panda is not free. The version we evaluated was Panda Antivirus Pro 2009 on XP SP2.

Panda requires that the incoming mail port be set to 995 and the outgoing mail port be set to 25. In addition, Panda does not require that the outgoing mail scan be disabled. We were not able to get any other combinations to work.

Panda blocked ftp file transfers. It may be possible to configure around that but it was not obvious how.

  1. First start Panda.

  2. Click on the Antivirus Protection entry

  3. Click on the Settings button for Scan mail

  4. Make sure there is a checkmark in the Scan inbound messages checkbox.
  5. You can set the checkmark in the Scan outbound messages checkbox or remove the checkmark. Both settings worked for sending email.

  6. Click on the OK button
  7. Click on the Apply button
  8. Click on the OK button and exit Panda.

  9. Open up your mail program. This example uses Outlook Express.

Navigate to the account server settings.

  10. Make sure the SMTP port (outgoing mail) is set to 25 and the POP3 port (incoming mail) is set to 995.
