Click menu "Windows" then menu item "Mail & Newsgroups".
Click menu "Edit" then menu item "Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings..."
Enter your email address in the "Account Name:" text field.
Enter the name you wish to be sent with emails in the "Your Name:" text field.
Enter your email address in the "Email Address:" text field.
If you wish to have "Replied" emails sent to a different email address,
enter that email address in the "Reply-to Address:" text field.
Click on "Server Settings" in the text area to the left.
Enter "mail.lafn.org" in the "Server Name:" text field.
Enter your userid in the "User Name:" text field.
"Use secure connection (SSL)" must be checked.
The port number will change from 110 to 995. You can either leave it as
995 or enter "110" (one one zero). At this time LAFN supports both ports.
Eventually port 995 will be discontinued.
If you desire not to use SSL/TLS then you can clear the Use secure Connection checkbox.
"Check for new mail at startup" should be checked.
"Check for new messages every" can be checked, and the number of minutes
should be greater than 5 (unlike the entry shown).
"Automatically download any new messages" should be checked.
"Leave messages on server" must be unchecked.
"Empty trash on exit" is up to you.
Click on "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" in the text area to the left. There are apparently at least 2 different formats for this window.
Enter "smtp.lafn.org" in the "Server Name:" text field.
Enter "25", "26", or "587" as desired in the "Port:" text field if it is blank.
"Use name and password" must be checked.
Enter your userid (not your entire email address) in the "User Name:" text
field.
"Use secure connection (SSL):" must have the "Always" radio button selected.
To not use SSL/TLS set the Use secure connection radio button to Never.

If you have this window then set TLS or SSL. TLS is known to work so it is probably the best choice.
Click the "OK" button to exit "Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings...".
Note that the first time you access your email and the first time you send
and email, you may be prompted to enter your LAFN password. Enter it remembering
that LAFN passwords are case-sensitive. This should only happen the first time
you try to receive or send mail.
