Configuring Netscape Messenger 4 for LAFN
Netscape 4 does not use SSL/TLS for downloading email or SMTP-AUTH for sending mail.
It does support SSL/TLS for sending mail. As a result, Netscape 4 can not be
used for mail.
the following are old instructions and are only provided for testing purposesas it appears there may be a way to get some of this working. Once we get more definitive results this section will be updated.
- Start Netscape Communicator.
- Click on menu "Communicator", then click on menu item "Messenger".
- This will open a "Netscape Messenger" window, the email client. Click on menu "Edit", then click on menu item "Preferences...".
- This will open the Netscape "Preferences" window to the "Mail & Newsgroups" section. Click on the "Identity" item in the text area to the left.
- Enter your name and E-mail address as shown.
- Click on the "Mail Servers" item in the text area to the left.
- Make sure that your userid is in the text field labeled, "Outgoing mail server user name:". (This is what is to the left of the '@' symbol in your email address; ie my email address is bc979lafn.org, my userid is bc979.
- Set the Use SSL for outgoing messages to Always.
- To not use SSL/TLS for sending mail set the Use SSL for outgoing messages to Never in the preceding dialog.
- Make sure the LAFN entry is selected in the Incoming Mail Servers windoe
and click on the Edit button.
- Make sure the Server Name, Server Type, and User Name are correct.
- Click on the POP tab
- Make sure the Leave messages on server checkbox is not selected. Otherwise
this will leave mail in your mailbox forever until it gets too large for Netscape to be able to handle the file. Then you would no longer receive e-mail.
- Click on the Ok button in the Mail Server Properties dialog.
- Click the "OK" button of the "Preferences" window.
Netscape Messenger is now configured for SSL/TLS.
The first time you send mail you will receive the following dialog:
- Click on the Next Button to move to the next dialog:
- Note that this certificate is issued by LAFN. Click on the Next button
to move to the next dialog:
- Select Accept this certificate forever.
- Click on the Next Button to move to the next dialog:
- Click on the Next Button to move to the next dialog:
- Click on the Finish button to move to the next dialog:
- This dialog indicates that you do not have a personal certificate.
That is not a problem as LAFN will not request one. Click on the OK button to
complete the process and send the message.
- This should be the last time you are asked about the certificate until
it expires at which time you will have to go through this again.
(Note: If you had to enter your userid in Step 5, then the next time you send an email
using Netscape Messenger, you will be prompted for your LAFN password. Remember that
LAFN passwords are case-sensitive! This prompt will only happen the first time you
send an email after the change.)
