How to configure your e-mail program

To utilize e-mail, your email client (Netscape Messenger 4.x and higher, Outlook Express, etc) must be correctly configured. There are two possible configurations for e-mail that can be used:
  1. SMTP-AUTH authentication for sending mail.
  2. SMTP-AUTH with SSL/TLS encryption.

SMTP-AUTH permits your computer to identify itself via your user id and password to our mail servers. Identification is always required to send mail. SMTP-AUTH sends your user id and password to our server in the clear so we can verify that you are authorized to use the mail server.

SSL/TLS can be configured to provide encryption of your user id and password. LAFN recommends the use of SSL/TLS to prevent your id and password from being monitored.

Some Anti-Virus packages conflict with the use of SSL/TLS when sending e-mail. You may need to disable checking of outgoing messages to enable SSL/TLS to work properly.

The e-mail system uses a variety of ports as there are variations of the protocols used by some of the common e-mail clients. See this listing of ports used by the mail system for information on selecting the proper ports.

In the instructions below, we show how to configure your mail program for SMTP-AUTH and SSL/TLS. Note that OE 5.5 does work with Windows 95.

Configuration instructions are provided for the following email clients:

After you have mail configured, use these procedures to Verify the proper configuration of SMTP-AUTH and TLS/SSL.
