How to configure your e-mail program

To utilize e-mail, your email client (Netscape Messenger 4.x and higher, Outlook Express, etc) must be correctly configured. There are two possible configurations for e-mail that can be used:
  1. SMTP-AUTH authentication for sending mail.
  2. SMTP-AUTH with SSL/TLS encryption.

SMTP-AUTH permits your computer to identify itself via your user id and password to our mail servers. Identification is always required to send mail. SMTP-AUTH sends your user id and password to our server in the clear so we can verify that you are authorized to use the mail server.

SSL/TLS can be configured to provide encryption of your user id and password. LAFN recommends the use of SSL/TLS to prevent your id and password from being monitored. There are two common forms of SSL/TLS: STARTTLS and SSL tunneling. LAFN only supports STARTTLS for outgoing mail. Mail clients often do not provide details on which protocol is actually being used for a given setting. Microsoft products often use SSL tunneling on port 25 and STARTTLS on other ports. However, we have found some versions that also use SSL Tunneling on port 26. You may need to try all 3 ports (25, 26, and 587) to find one that works properly.

Some Anti-Virus packages conflict with the use of SSL/TLS when sending e-mail. You may need to disable checking of outgoing messages to enable SSL/TLS to work properly. We also occasionally find some mail programs that are affected by anti-virus packages and are unable to download mail using the regular ports. You may have to try combinations of ports and SSL vs TLS settings to find the one that works for you. We are adding sections for some of the popular anti-virus packages showing how to configure them to work with sending and receiving e-mail.

The e-mail system uses a variety of ports as there are variations of the protocols used by some of the common e-mail clients. See this listing of ports used by the mail system for information on selecting the proper ports.

In the instructions below, we show how to configure your mail program for SMTP-AUTH and SSL/TLS. Note that OE 5.5 does work with Windows 95.
