Configuring Outlook 2003 for LAFN
Outlook 2003 does not support SSL/TLS on port 26 properly.
Therefore it cannot be used on ISPs that block access to port 25 or 587.
Later versions may work on port 26.
The following note on changing the mail configuration for Outlook 2000 may
apply to Outlook 2003;
Apparently, Outlook 2000 will not reconfigure itself properly while in
Corporate or Workgroup mode. This frequently shows up as mail not going out at
all.
Then set the configuration as described below. Test it out (see the
procedure on the preceding page, and once new configuration is working
properly, Outlook can be changed back to
Corporate or Workgroup mode (if desired) and will still work properly.
Start Outlook
- From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
- Click on the E-Mail Accounts Tab.
- Click on the Add anew e-mail account Button if you do not have a LAFN
account or Click on the View or change existing-email accounts if you have
a LAFN account in Outlook.
- The Internet Connection Wizard screen will appear.
- Select the proper Outlook account name.
- Click on the Change button.
- Enter your name in the Your Name field.
- Type your e-mail address in the e-mail address box. This should be the complete email address as shown in the example above.
- Enter mail.lafn.org as the incoming mail server.
- Enter smtp.lafn.org as the outgoing mail server.
- The User Name should be automatically generated from the previous information but be sure its correct.
- Make sure the Log on using Secure Password Authentication box is not checked.
- Click the More Settings button.
- Click on the Outgoing Server tab.
- Select My outgoing server requires authentication.
- You should be able to use the Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
- Click on the Advanced tab.
- The incoming server port must be set to 110.
- The outgoing server port must be set to 25, 26, or 587. Note, changing the box below will alter this setting so you may need to reset it.
- The this server requires an encrypted connection checkbox can only be used if your are able to connect on port 25. If that port is blocked, try port 587. If that does not work then you cannot use SSL. Outlook does not support SSL on port 26.
- Click on the OK button.
- Click the Finish button.
