Configuring Outlook Express 6 for LAFN
Outlook Express 6 does not support SSL/TLS on port 26 properly.
Therefore it cannot be used on ISPs that block access to port 25 or port 587.
Later versions may work on port 26.
After starting Outlook Express it will take you directly to the Internet
Connection Wizard (below) if it has never been configured.
If you have an existing LAFN account in Outlook Express then go to the
Account Configuration section below.
If you do not have an existing LAFN account in Outlook Express then you
need to do the following:
- From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
- Click on the Mail Tab.
- Click on the Add Button and select Mail.
- The Internet Connection Wizard screen will appear.
- Type your name in the Display Name box.
- Click on the Next button.
- Type your e-mail address in the e-mail address box.
- Click the Next button.
- Leave POP3 as the Incoming mail server.
- Type mail.lafn.org in the Incoming mail server box.
- Type smtp.lafn.org in the Outgoing mail server box.
- Click on the Next button.
- Type your LAFN username in the Account Name box.
- Type your password in the Password box.
- Select Remember password.
- Click on the Next button.
- Click the Finish button.
Account Configuration
- From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
- Click on the Mail Tab.
- First select your LAFN mail account in the left column.
It will probably be named either "mail", "LAFN", "LAFN mail" or something
very similar, and will almost certainly say "mail (default)" in the
second column.
- Next click the "Properties" button to the right. This will open the "mail Properties" window.
- Click on the "Servers" tab at the top of the window.
- Be sure the checkbox for Log on using Secure Password Authentication is not checked.
- Check the "My server requires authentication" checkbox.
- Click the Apply button.
- Click the "Settings..." button. This will open the "Outgoing Mail Server" window.
- Select the "Log on using" radio button.
- Make sure that your userid is in the text field labeled, "Account name:".
(This is what is to the left of the '@' symbol in your email address;
ie my email address is bc979@lafn.org, my userid is bc979).
- Enter your password carefully in the text field labeled, "Password".
Remember that LAFN passwords are case-sensitive.
- Check the "Remember password" checkbox.
- Do not select the Log on using Secure Password Authentication
- Click the OK button.
- Click on the Advanced tab.
- You must use 25, 26, or 587 in the "Server Port Numbers - Outgoing mail (SMTP)" text field.
- Click on both checkboxes for This server requires a secure connection (SSL).The port number for Incoming mail for newer versions will probably have to be
set to 110.
- Make sure the Leave a copy of messages on server checkbox is not checked.
- Click the "Apply" button, then the "OK" button of the "mail Properties" window.
- Click the "Close" button of the "Internet Accounts" window.
- The first time you send or receive e-mail you will probably receive the following dialog:
- Click on the Yes button to use our certificate.
