Configuring Eudora 6 or 7 for LAFN

Note, Eudora 6 has a broken implementation of TLS 1.0 and it has to be disabled so that it will use SSL 3.0 which is implemented correctly.

Update Windows Eudora to disable TLS

  1. Make sure Eudora is running.

  2. Copy and paste the text below into a new message in Eudora

    <x-eudora-option:SSLReceiveVersion=6>
    <x-eudora-option:SSLSendVersion=6>

  3. Go to the end of each line and add a return so that the text turns blue.

  4. Move the cursor away from the text.

  5. Hold down the ALT key and move the cursor over the first entry. The cursor should change to a hand.

  6. Continue to hold down the ALT key and click on it. You should receive the f ollowing dialog:

  7. The new value should be in the field and all you need to do is press the OK button.

  8. Repeat for the second entry.

  9. Quit Eudora and restart it.

Update Macintosh Eudora to disable TLS

The following has not been tested on Version 6 and may not work.
  1. Copy and paste the text below into a new message in Eudora and double click on the resulting URL

    <x-eudora-setting:32456=768>

Configuring Eudora

  1. Start Eudora.
  2. Select the Tools menu.
  3. Select the Options menu item.
  4. Select the Getting Started icon.

  5. Enter your Real name - used for return addresses
  6. Enter your return address
  7. Enter the Mail server (incoming) as mail.lafn.org
  8. Enter your Login Name - User Id
  9. Enter the SMTP Server (Outgoing) as smtp.lafn.org
  10. Select Allow authentication.
  11. Select the Checking Mail icon.

  12. You probably want to select Don't check without a network connection. This keeps Eudora from complaining when you are working with mail and not connected to LAFN.
  13. You may want to check Save password. If other people can access or use your computer don't select this item.
  14. Secure Sockets when Receiving can be set to None if you don't mind your User ID and password appearing on the internet. We recommend setting Required, STARTTLS to encrypt that information.
  15. Select the Incoming Mail icon.

  16. Make sure POP is selected.
  17. Make sure Leave mail on the server is not selected.
  18. Make sure Passwords is selected.
  19. Select the Sending Mail icon.

  20. You can select Immediate send or Send on Check as desired.
  21. Select Allow authentication
  22. Set Secure Sockets when Sending to Required, STARTTLS.
  23. If you do not want SSL/TLS then set that to Never.
  24. Click on OK to save the settings.

Setting the SSL Certificates

  1. To be able to send e-mail you first must download e-mail. Download and receive the error that the certificate is not trusted.

  2. Select Tools menu.

  3. Select Options menu item.

  4. Select the Checking Mail icon.

  5. Select the Last SSL Info button.

  6. Select the large Certificate Information Manager button.

  7. Select the Add To Trusted button.

  8. Select the Done button.

  9. Now send an e-mail. You will get an error message that says (in part) Cert Chain not trusted.

  10. Select Tools menu.

  11. Select Options menu item.

  12. Select the Sending Mail icon.

  13. Select the Last SSL Info button.

  14. Select the large Certificate Information Manager button.

  15. Select the Add To Trusted button.

  16. Select the Done button.

  17. Select the OK buttons to save the settings.

  18. Quit Eudora and restart it for the new settings to work.

Please note that you will probably have to download e-mail before you can send each time you start the Eudora program.

If you need to change the port for sending mail because port 25 is blocked, Copy esoteric.epi in the extrastuff subdirectory in the Program directory (Probably Windows\Programs\Qualcomm\Eudora6\extrastuff) and paste it one level up in the Program directory(where you have eudora.exe). You now have a "Ports" category in Tools -> Options. Set the SMTP port to 26 or 587.

That changes the SMTP port globally. If you need it for just one Personality you have to close Eudora and add SMTPPort=26 or SMTPPort=587 in the section for that Personality in eudora.ini.
